Project 009

This project has transformed an iconic timepiece into a striking black statement piece. Every element of the case has been finished in a deep shade of black, giving the timepiece a new visual identity. Beyond aesthetics, the transformation explores the power of contrast, with darkness taking on the meanings of precision, depth and restraint.
The Owner’s Vision
The owner, a watch collector new to customization, wished to give one of his pieces a more contemporary and expressive character. He wanted a piece that would stand out in his collection with a stronger visual identity and refined style something iconic, but discreet. Inspired by the work of Pierre Soulages, he envisioned a powerful presence of black, where glossy and matte surfaces interact to shape light itself. He approached us to create a custom design that reflected his personal taste.

Full black project
The transformation began with a complete disassembly of the watch. Each component was carefully restored and prepared for the black coating. Every trace of wear was removed to ensure a flawless, uniform surface. The hands and indexes were hand-painted in black, and the original white luminescent material was replaced with custom black SLN to reinforce the monochrome aesthetic. In this new form, black conveys a sense of power, enhancing the watch’s sculptural presence and giving it a calm, deliberate intensity.

Brushed and polished finition
Before the black coating was applied, each component was meticulously restored ans finished by hand in our Swiss workshops to define the dual surface treatments. The flat surfaces of the bezel and larger bracelet links were brushed to create a fine, linear texture. Meanwhile, the angles, crown, and intermediate links were polished to a mirror-like shine. Each junction between the two finishes was refined under magnification to ensure flawless transitions and precise reflections before the final coating was applied.

Black DLC treatment
The deep black color was achieved by applying a DLC coating (diamond-like carbon) in a controlled, vacuum environment. This ultra-thin layer of carbon is approximately 2 to 4 microns thick and is deposited atom by atom to ensure exceptional hardness and superior wear resistance. The coating bonds perfectly when the process occurs at an ideal temperature of around 200–300°C. This process represents a technical and aesthetic transformation. The dense color absorbs light while revealing subtle reflections along every curve.

In its new monochrome form, the piece embodies both transformation and continuity, a personal interpretation of timeless design through the lens of modern craftsmanship. As with every Alter project, it strikes a balance between creative interpretation and technical mastery, executed with uncompromising Swiss precision.
The project was created through a mix of high-resolution photographs and digital renders, allowing a detailed view of the final result. All restoration and finishing work were carried out in our Swiss workshops with the same precision and respect for craftsmanship that define the highest standards in luxury watchmaking.
